Selling a Car
Selling
a car can be difficult, but it does not have to be. If you are not
up to the small stresses and time that selling a car takes, then
you may want to trade it in to a dealership or sell it to a used
car lot. But remember that you are going to make a lot more money
off of your vehicle if you decide to sell it yourself.
When selling a car yourself, there are a few steps that you need
to take.
Selling a car involves preparing your car to be sold
• It is important that potential buyers get a good first
impression from your vehicle.
• Therefore, you want to make sure that it is clean, both
inside and out. Washing the wheels and tires can make your care
look loads cleaner.
• Get your vehicle inspected.
• Have ready all of your maintenance records and other such
useful pieces of information. People want to see that you have been
taking good care of your car.
• Spending a small amount of money to fix up things like scrapes
and dings can make you more money in the long run. The same thing
is true of small mechanical problems.
A good asking price is an important aspect of selling a car
• Decide how much to sell your car for by deciding whether
or not your car is in high demand. SUVs, family sedans, and certain
other vehicles are often in high demand.
• You can sell your car for the suggested retail value. This
amount is relatively easy to find. I suggest checking out the Kelley
blue book which can be found at your library or online.
• Check out advertisements for cars similar to yours and see
how much they are asking for. Take into account the make, model,
year, mileage, etc.
• Ask for more money than you are willing to sell your car
for. For instance, if you want to get at least $7,000 for your car,
then you can have an asking price of $7,500.
Selling a car to the right people in the right way… how to
choose your advertising
• Think of not just where, but when to sell your car. For
instance, a sports car or convertible will sell best during the
summer months.
• Advertise the sale of your car in more than one place. There
are many free places to advertise your car, as well as classifieds
in which you must pay a small fee.
• Use online classifieds, like cars.com, Edmunds.com, or even
craigslist.com. Put a for sale sign in your car and park it near
a place that sees lots of traffic (or just keep the sign up as your
drive it around yourself. Be sure to include your contact info.
Post an ad in a free weekly papers or your local newspaper.
• In your advertisement, include the make, model, and year
of your car, as well as your asking price. Be sure to also include
anything that will make your car stand out from others, like its
low mileage, high gas mileage, reliability, etc. Do not exaggerate,
though.
I hope that these ideas and steps on selling a car are helpful to
you. Again, selling a car can be very difficult, but it does not
have to be. Just follow these simple steps. Rules regarding the
sale of a vehicle differ from state to state, so be sure to check
with your department of motor vehicles beforehand to see exactly
which forms, etc. you must fill out. Remember to have fun selling
a car!
