How to Find a Mechanic
You
have likely heard horrible stories about how people were taken advantage
of monetarily by their mechanics or how their cars broke down soon
after it got “fixed” by their mechanic. So, how can
you avoid such problems as these? This article is going to tell
you how to find a mechanic.
Sure, you could find just any mechanic by flipping through the
phonebook, but you do not want “just any” mechanic.
You want a good mechanic, right? But do you know how to find a mechanic
that is good?
How to find a mechanic ( a good one, that is)
Ask for their credentials. Make sure that the auto shop has all
of the different certifications for all of the various major areas
of automotive repair and maintenance. If they cannot show you these
credentials, then do not even show them your car.
Look for the A.S.E. symbol that will be displayed at a repair shop
(if you do not see it, feel free to ask). The A.S.E. symbol shows
that the repair shop has employees that have at least 2 and ½
years of experience (in at least one major area of automotive repairs).
Just as you might with another business, check with the Better Business
Bureau. See if any formal complaints have been filed against the
repair shop.
Appearances can be important. It is a good sign if the shop is nice
and tidy… it shows that the mechanics take pride in their
work and in their tools.
Ask around. Ask your friends which mechanic that they use. Many
people feel pretty strongly about past or current mechanics that
they have visited. Find out which ones they loved and which ones
they hated.
Although the location of a repair shop does not have anything
to do with how good the mechanics are, a close repair shop can certainly
make life easier on you. If your car is going be at the shop for
an extended period of time, it is much easier if you can easily
find a ride home!
Consider keeping a car journal. The more you can tell your mechanic
about the problems your car is having, the better he or she may
be able to assist you in fixing those problems. Also, keep in your
journal how your car does after you take it to the mechanic. Be
sure to keep track of any odd experience you have.
Be sure to save your receipt for all repairs and maintenance. Not
only can these help you solve disputes, they can also make it easier
for you to resell your car.
If these few hints did not help teach you how to find a mechanic,
then there is always trial and error! (Only joking) Finding out
how to find a mechanic can be almost as difficult as actually finding
one. But it can be hoped that this guide on how to find a mechanic
has helped you, at least a little bit.
